I spent a full day watching, analysing and writing quotes from TED Talks about self-esteem, mediocrity and overall mental health in the creative industry (among other things). From there, I came up with an idea.
The initial idea was to create a zine, showcasing lots of 'average' objects that people don't really bat an eyelid at on a day-to-day basis, such as a bin-bag, a spork, a scourer sponge etc.
But why not take it one step further and host an exhibition instead?
An Exhibition of the Fantastically Average
Values surrounding the exhibition that I want to express, are that things may be viewed as average today, but back when they were created, they were a brilliant, innovative idea, and just because our view of that thing has changed doesn't mean its value has changed in any way.
E.g: If bin bags were all of a sudden gone from the world, we would live in a dangerously messy, disgusting world!
In the same sense, just because you don't think your work is as good compared to other's, doesn't mean everyone will think the same. "One man's trash is another man's treasure." The value of work doesn't change, even when different people's idea of average is different!
